A major network news broadcast is preparing to do a profile of Operation Iraqi Children, and they want to film regular people buying, assembling, and sending in school supply kits. The network will then follow the donated packages through our warehouse in Kansas City, then to Iraq, where they will film the Iraqi children opening the packages. They will be selecting several donors to follow.

If you are interested in being a subject of this story, please email your name, city, and a description of your donor group (are you an individual? a family? a school? a church group?) to If you are a family, please let us know the ages of your children. If you are a school, please let us know what grades will be participating. Please give us some way to contact you, whether by email or telephone.

Because of the volume of emails, we may not be able to reply to each message, but the network producers will carefully consider each donor, and will contact those they wish to film. Thank you so much for your participation! This will get the word out to a generation of new OIC donors.

Thank you!

Laura Hillenbrand,
co-founder, OIC

Saw your message of 10 June about TV coverage and wanted to tell your of our efforts. Some time ago I posted a note elsewhere on this forum about our clubs intentions. (Maybe the message got lost in the many replies?) The Port Townsend (WA) Rotary Club has decided to buy a school supply kit for each of our 90 members to send to Iraq. Our local general store, Swains, has given us a discount on all 11 items and we are in the process of getting the kits together now.

At the same time we are preparing an announcement with pictures and details of this effort on our PT Rotary web site.
Here is the URL

Since w are a member club of Rotary District 5020, a total of 95 clubs, we are hoping some of the other clubs in the District will see our web page and follow suit with donations. Perhaps this effort will snowball.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this wonderful program. I am the administrator for a site that is devoted to participating in charity projects (unofficially) in the name of the Scottish actor, Billy Boyd, who starred as Pippin in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. We are going to participate in purchasing school kits and sending them to Kansas City. You can see info about this at Billy Boyd is aware of our projects and I have cleared our participation in your project with him.

I hope we will be able to add greatly to the school supplies and be an asset to your project.

Thank you,

Robin Harmon

Dear Laura and Gary,

Our school year ended almost one month ago. However, last Friday I regrouped my class of third graders as well as a few of their upper classmen friends to package an additional 40 school kits. The project that ended their school year in early June was still alive in their hearts and minds. We now have boxed and ready for shipment 318 kits as well as nine boxes of sports equipment. Personnel from FedEx and FedEx Kinkos were on hand to help tape and label our boxes! Thank you for championing Operation Iraqi Children and giving us the opportunity to generously share and participate in the reconstruction of a free Iraq. My interest in this project extends beyond my classroom. My son, Capt. Sam Carrasco, USMC, has returned to Iraq for his second tour of duty with the 11 MEU. Semper Fi!

This is a cc of an e-mail I sent to Linda Vester at Fox News to see if we could get any media involvement. I think the media involvement will need Gary Sinese in order for the media to show up. So here is my question...Gary Sinise..will you come to our media Chicago on July 15th at 1:15 this is when we load the truck. Obviously, we could do this at any time you are available. We are in if your are available, we could get some publicity for Operation Iraqi Children .

Dear Linda,
I am a regular viewer of Fox news and your show Dayside. I was watching your program when you interviewed Gary Sinise earlier this year. Gary spent alot of time explaining Operation Iraqi Children and you showed alot of video. It inspired me and my friend Joyce (who has a son, a Marine Captain, in Iraq right now) to have a drive to collect school supplies. We did hold a drive and collected 350 school kits plus sports equipment.

We were just about ready to ship all boxes to "Heart to Heart" in KC when we learned from the folks at Heart to Heart that since our drive had been so successful, they would like to consider a media event to publicize Operation Iraqi Children.

That sounded great to everyone but, so far, there is no one in the media willing to spend any time on this. I know this is not Breaking News so you may not be interested either, but before I really do ship 350 school kits to KC, I thought that maybe...because of your relationship with Gary...and maybe since we are in Chicago, close to where Gary lives... maybe I could pull this together if I had help.

I know it is alot of IF's, but maybe the local Fox station here in Chicago might give us 15 or 20 minutes on July 15th at 1:15 (which is when the truck is coming to pick up the 70+ boxes of school supplies). We will be loading the truck. This is where I might need your help/influence. Can you ask the local Chicago Fox staff to do this? Would you do that? I am also e-mailing Gary through the Operation Iraqi Children website to let him know about this.

If I had to, I could change the date and time of the truck, but that also is a volunteered effort. The truck and transportation costs have been donated to us. So it would be better to do this on or before the 15th of July.

We think we did a good thing by collecting school kits, so if there is no media attention it is really no skin off our teeth, but Operation Iraqi Children is important and we would like to publicize it.

Thanks and I hope you had a great 4th of July weekend.

I saw your message and wanted to let you know of the great community effort that we are preparing for the end of this month. I am among many military wives at Edwards AFB, that are going to to be starting a collection drive. We are all strongly hoping that this program will indeed improve the relationship of our troops with local Iraqi's and in turn make for an easier (safer) deployment to that region. With our faith in our husbands and in God we are excited to undergo this challenge. We are planning the drive to run through Aug. and package and ship around the 30th. If you would like more info please call us
